TRANSITIONAL JUSTICE UNIT

This Unit is mainly responsible for undertaking and publishing research on a range of issues pertaining to Transitional Justice initiatives in Sierra Leone, such as the Special Court, The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Reparation for Human Rights Abuses, the Relationship between the Special Court and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the impact of the Special Court on the National Courts. The unit is also responsible for providing legal advice and representation to victims of unfair Labour practices.

Major activities undertaken by the Unit during the past five years

  • In September 2006 the Director of the Centre, Melron Nicol-Wilson, presented papers on Human Rights and the Rule of Law in Post Conflict Sierra Leone at Three Universities in Tennessee, USA- Vanderbilt University, Fisk University and Tennessee State University.
  • In December 2001 the Director of the Centre attended a meeting on the relationship between the United Nations Special Court and the Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission organized by the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
  • The Director of the Centre also presented a paper on Transitional Justice in Sierra Leone at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Boston, United States of America in October 2001
  • In October 2002 in collaboration with the Centre for Media Education and Technology (C-MET) the Special Court Watch was published with the aim of informing the general public from a neutral perspective about the work of the Special Court and the impact it would have in developing our domestic legal system. The publication also aimed at educating members of the international community about the expectations that Sierra Leonean attach to the work of the Court as well as the participation of Sierra Leonean in its functioning.

Major case dealt with by the Unit during the past five years

Presently, the Director of the Centre is representing an indigent Indictee at the Special Court for Sierra Leone by the name of Morris Kallon formerly of the Revolutionary United Front (RUF). Mr Kallon has been indicted on Eighteen Counts including allegations of gross violations of International Humanitarian Law and Sierra Leonean Law. A total of Ten indictees are before the court on similar charges.
